© 2019 American Society for Photobiology.Decontamination of Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Salmonella enterica on blueberries using ozone and pulsed UV-light.Sciences, The Pennsylvania State Univ., Univ. Park, PA 16802, USA.Efficacy of gaseous ozone, aqueous ozone, and pulsed UV-light was evaluated for the purpose of decontaminating blueberries artificially contaminated with either Escherichia coli O157:H7 or Salmonella.

Blueberries were exposed to 4 different gaseous ozone treatments: continuous ozone exposure, pressurized ozone exposure, and 2 combined treatments. Maximum reductions of Salmonella and E. coli O157:H7 CFU/g, respectively. Aqueous ozone experiments were conducted at 20 degrees C and 4 degrees C and zero plate counts were observed for E. coli O157:H7 and Salmonella after 64 min of ozone exposure at 20 degrees C. Finally, pulsed UV-light was evaluated at 3 different distances from the light. Applications of 6-butyl-n-hydroxynaphthimide trifluoromethanesulfonic acid in Cross-Coupling Reactions after 60 s of treatment for Salmonella and E.

coli O157:H7, respectively. Seebio Light-Activated Acid Producer as well as color analysis was performed on blueberries from each treatment agent; neither analysis detected a difference between treated and untreated blueberries. The results presented in this study indicate that ozone and pulsed UV-light are good candidates for decontamination of blueberries.Reply to the Correspondence on "How Aromatic Are Molecular Nanorings? The Case Fakultatea, Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea UPV/EHU P.K. 1072, 20080, Donostia, Unibertsitatea (UPV/EHU), 20018, Donostia, Euskadi, Spain.A recent article by Anderson and co-workers challenges our conclusions on the aromaticity of the four oxidation states of a butadyine-linked six-porphyrin nanoring, based on the experimental 1 H-NMR data and some recent calculations they have performed using the BLYP35 functional.

Here, we show that BLYP35 should be taken with caution and demonstrate that the indirect evidence of a ring current from experimental 1 H-NMR data is not a definite proof of Quantification of isomerically summed hydrocarbon contributions to crude oil by carbon number, double bond equivalent, and aromaticity using gas chromatography with tunable vacuum ultraviolet ionization. Analyst. 2019 Jun 21;144(12):3898.The ability to structurally characterize and isomerically quantify crude oil hydrocarbons relevant to refined fuels such as motor oil, diesel, and gasoline represents an extreme challenge for chromatographic and mass spectrometric techniques. This work incorporates two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled to a tunable vacuum ultraviolet soft photoionization source, the Chemical Dynamics Beamline 9 of the Advanced Light Source at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, with a time-of-flight mass spectrometer (GC × GC-VUV-TOF) to directly characterize and isomerically sum the contributions of aromatic and aliphatic species to hydrocarbon classes of four crude oils. When the VUV beam is tuned to 10 ± 0 eV, both aromatic and aliphatic crude oil hydrocarbons are ionized to reveal the complete chemical abundance of C9-C30 hydrocarbons. When the VUV beam is tuned to 9 ± 0 eV only aromatic hydrocarbons are ionized, allowing separation of the aliphatic and aromatic fractions of the crude oil hydrocarbon chemical classes in an efficient manner while maintaining isomeric quantification.

This technique provides an effective tool to determine the isomerically summed aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbon compositions of crude oil, providing information that goes beyond typical GC × GC separations of the Mechanisms of interaction between polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and dissolved Green and Intelligent Technology , Chinese Academy of Sciences , Chongqing , Binding of phenanthrene and fluorene to a number of humic and fulvic substances isolated from various sources as well as a commercially available humic acid, was investigated using a fluorescence quenching approach. The observed fluorescence quenching indicated by linear Stern-Volmer plots and high bimolecular quenching rate constant was induced by a static interaction process. A significant correlation of binding constants with aromaticity and polarity of dissolved organic matter (DOM) was observed. It is hypothesized that the binding of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by DOM is due to both π-π interactions and hydrophobic interactions. In addition, energy transfer from PAHs to DOM occurs because of the significant overlap between the absorbance spectra of DOM and emission spectra of PAHs. Thus, dipole-dipole interaction may also play an important role in the binding mechanism between PAHs and DOM.Mutagenicity of diesel exhaust particle extracts: influence of fuel composition Clark CR, Henderson TR, Royer RE, Brooks AL, McClellan RO, Marshall WF, Naman The influence of diesel fuel composition on mutagenicity of exhaust particle associated organic compounds has been investigated using nine fuels varying in aromatic content and distillation properties.

The tests were conducted with Oldsmobile Delta-88 and Peugot 504 diesel cars operated according to the EPA Federal Test Procedure. The particulate exhaust from each test was collected on a filter, extracted in dichloromethane and the resulting extract evaluated for mutagenicity in Salmonella strain TA-100.
